WW4W - Web: Working for Women
* FREE courses at the University of Luton to assist women in small and medium businesses in the region to become more competitive. The region includes Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex.
* Voluntary organisations do qualify but delegates must be paid some sort of salary as the university charges back to the ESF a percentage of each delegates annual salary.
* These series of short courses have been designed especially for today's working women. Research shows that fewer women are using the web to its full potential. The following courses aim to provide vital tools for women to compete effectively within the business environment.

Using Email for Work? – Legal requirements for employers and employees
More and more groups are using email as part of their work, but it is probably true that not all of us have looked into, or understood, the legal guidelines both in relation to the rights of the employer / the organisation and the rights of the individual email user (staff and volunteers). 'Email Monitoring In The Workplace' is written Gill Hunter at Robert Muckle Solicitors and looks at the different legal regulations affecting this. It can be downloaded as a pdf file at: http://www.waterfordtechnologies.com/pdf/emailmonitoring.pdf

Women's Training Events - Emailing List
* Last April microsyster set up a trial web based calendar to list training of interest to women working in the voluntary sector and to individual women, partly because this information was getting lost in the events on the Women in London web site and the linked notice board and calendars - london and countrywide. But the response we got was that this web based calendar was not very user friendly, or appropriate.
* So we have now set up a 'Yahoo Group' as these seem to have become more common in the voluntary sector, particularly by CVSs who are using them to keep local groups informed. Please have a look at: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/womeninlondontraining/ and let us know if you think this would be useful to you / your organisation as we have set it up so that anyone can view the entries / listings of forthcoming training via the web.
* If you want to receive training information via email you need to 'subscribe' to the list. You can either get email information as and when it is sent, or you can subscribe so that you get digests, which are less frequent.
* If you subscribe to the group you can then also make postings to the group. To start getting emails just send a blank email to: womeninlondontraining-subscribe@yahoogroups.co.uk
* If you only want to get digests you will need to create a Yahoo Group identity and set the options to only receive emails as digests. Go to womeninlondontraining yahoo group and use the link to 'Sign Up' and then the link 'Join this Group'
* Please do let us have feed back on this. It is intended to be a shared resource for training opportunities focused on women.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Microsoft has released 'Service Pack 2' for Windows XP to try and rectify the weaknesses of the original version. However many who have downloaded and installed this have since experienced problems. So if you want to learn more about Windows XP SP2, then visit the Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) Support Centre at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=windowsxpsp2. This includes answers and solutions to the three most common topics:
Installing Service Pack 2
What to do after installing Service Pack 2
Using programs and hardware with Service Pack 2
Some people are suggesting it is easier to install SP2 from a CD, which you can order for delivery by post but … it may take up to 6 weeks to arrive, but you can share the update files with other users of Windows XP.

September 2004 WRC with LASA : ICT Workshops
The Women's Resource Centre (wrc.org.uk) in partnership with LASA (lasa.org.uk) is running a series of summer workshops aimed at those in the women's voluntary and community sector who have responsibility for their organisation's computer systems. Covering a wide range of subjects and aimed at all levels, the courses will give you the tools you need to successfully manage Information and Communications Technology (ICT) within your organisation. Concentrating more on planning, managing and implementing ICT than on software use, these workshops are particularly suited to those with little experience of managing ICT. The series of courses will be run in September. All courses will be held at the University of London Union, Malet Street. Half day courses will cost just £10 for members (£60 for non-members) with full day courses at £15 for members (£100 for non-members).

The London Portal
* Recent surveys of the capital cities of the world have ranked London poorly in terms of its presentation on the internet. Despite the thousands of websites portraying different aspects of our city, there is no single point of entry where the resident, business or visitor can be confident of getting access to a comprehensive and objective view of what London has to offer. The London Portal project aims to rectify this, and place London at the forefront of world city portals.
* From July to October, we shall be running a series of workshops designed to take forward initiatives around the London Portal. We wish to invite participation in the workshops by colleagues in the London Boroughs, GLA group, health, police, emergency services, businesses, representative organisations, voluntary and community groups. If you would like to participate, please email roger.rickard@londonconnects.org.uk, indicating any particular area of interest.

12th July 2004 Welcome to the WOMEN in IT (WINIT) web-site.
* Let's face it, there has been much airspace devoted to the theme of women and technology over the past twenty years and there has been some general improvement in this area but not enough!
* The WINIT project is devoted not to scratching the surface of this problem but to actually do some digging. We aim to unearth the truth behind the statistics and report back regarding the question on everybody's lips Why are women under-represented in IT?
* They're at http://www.isi.salford.ac.uk/gris/winit/index.html if you'd like to take a look.
* The role of this web-site is primarily as a point of contact but also hosts our on-line questionnaires and contact details together with case studies and project findings will be published there.
* A significant outcome of the project will be the identification of good practice within the industry. This will provide a basis for offering solutions to the gender imbalance that may impact on government and employer policies of women in the IT labour market. WINIT will also contribute to current academic debates surrounding gender, technology and the workplace

2nd July 2004 London Connects VCS Working Group : Decision Day
* The Infrastructure Project has been the focus of much of the work of the London Connects Group which was originally set up to look at the VCS' needs in relation to ICT and engagement in the e-Government agenda. This is the area that could help the smaller VCS and community groups through supporting action at sub-regional level and through Councils for Voluntary Service (CVS) that exist in most boroughs as representative bodies of the sector. The Infrastructure Project has now been taken up by the Home Office Active Communities Unit (ACU). It is being taken forward by a consortium involving NCVO, LASA, NACVS and IT4Communities. For more information and background see http://www.lasa.org.uk/cvs/
* There is a Decision Day being held on the results of the consultation carried out on the project being held from 10am to 4pm on Friday 2 July (coffee from 9.30am), City University, Northampton Square, London EC1. Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided. The event is free to attend. Most delegates will represent London CVSs; further participants will represent Lasa, LVSC and other stakeholders in voluntary sector ICT in London.
Future London Connects VCS Working Group Activity
Many of the issues for the sector, first identified by the working group in 2003, still remain. The focus of activity in London, for the moment remains the Infrastructure Project and the development of Circuit Riders (see http://www.lasa.org.uk/circuitriders/). A paper on priority actions for London Connects has been presented to the working group at its last meeting and this identified a number of other actions that should be looked at. This included a workshop to disseminate good practice on funding partnerships between public agencies and VCS service providers. Given the interest in Futurebuilders and Intermediaries above this may be a useful role for London Connects to play. Following the GLA and Mayoral elections in June plus the ongoing activities outlined above we will be reviewing the role and function of the VCS group over the summer. If anyone has any issues they think it would be worth the working group and London Connects taking up please email me at malcolm.forbes@brixton-online.com
