New UK Online Centres website : http://www.ufi.com/ukol/
launched by the Ufi and replacing the DfES site, this one has information about centres and what they can offer learners as well as a searchable database - with improved information. UK online centres aim to ensure that everyone in the UK who wants it will have access to computers, internet and email near to where they live. You can use a computer to access useful information, keep up with the kids, find a job, or even shop online - our helpful staff are on hand to give you as much support as you need. UK online centres are community based - they could be in an internet café on the high street, in a public library, a college, a community centre, a village hall - some are even mobile. They have been designed to meet the needs of local people who would otherwise not have access to computers. There are now over 6000 UK online centres across the country.
UK Online Centres need to evolve to help marginalised groups access e-government services : http://www.citizensonline.org.uk/pdf/DigitalEquality1.pdf
If e-government services are to reach marginalised groups the UK's current network of 6,000 UKOnline community internet access centres needs to evolve into community media centres supported by sustainable investment and partnerships with other organisations, according to a report from Citizens Online.
Building Evidence, Demonstrating Effectiveness (BEDE) : http://www.bassac.org.uk/info_bede.htm
is an impact evaluation project run by bassac, the network for multi-purpose community organisations. The first draft tools include:
* mapping service users journey through an organisation
* social capital surveying inside and outside the organisation.
This programme aims to help local community organisations prove the success of their work to their users, staff, management committee, funders, local authority and to the wider community. This work is funded over three years by the Active Community Unit of the Home Office.
Online Volunteering (formerly NetAid) is now at: http://www.onlinevolunteering.org
Online Volunteering (OV) service, managed by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, connects online volunteers with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), UN organizations and academic institutions all over the world (including organizations working in gender-related issues, such as girls education, women's rights, etc.).
Volunteers from all over the world are helping organizations that serve communities in developing countries -- but without leaving their own communities. These online volunteers translate documents, write articles, research data, build web sites, mentor young people, design logos, and engage in many other projects to benefit organizations serving people in the developing world. Online volunteers are volunteers without frontiers.
For Volunteers : Get involved in a development project without leaving home.
For Organizations : Receive support from online volunteers around the world.
