Ongoing Brent Browsealoud
The London Borough of Brent has added speech software to its web site for people with vision or reading impairments.  Users can adjust speed, volume and language according to their needs.  The software, 'Browsealoud', is free to download:  http://www.brent.gov.uk

11th December 2003 Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations
come into effect relating to unsolicited commercial e-mail, cookies and other privacy issues in electronic communications.  This is part of an EU Directive and means that no one should transmit unsolicited communications for the purpose of direct marketing by use of electronic mail unless the recipient has given prior consent.  IT for Charities have written an overview of these regulations and looked at how charities using email might be effected.  Go to:  http://www.itforcharities.co.uk/ic/ecdirect.htm

Ongoing IT Empowering the Workforce

25th November 2003 Strategies of Inclusion: Gender and the Information Society (SIGIS)
The results of a major two-year European study on public and private initiatives to include and attract women to information and communication technology (ICT) use, employment and education are now available.  This research project, funded by the European Commission IST (Information Society Technologies) Programme, has published a collection of case studies and analyses for policy makers, product designers and service developers.  The reports are available online at http://www.sigis-ist.org as well as details of a number of national and regional events on gender and information technology in the next few months.

Ongoing Free software for creating documents in Portable Document Format (PDF)
PDF 995 is easy to install, easy to use - and is free!  Once the software is installed, simply select the "print" command from any application, creating a document that can be viewed from any computer with a PDF viewer.  Go to:  http://www.pdf995.com/ - please check the specifications / requirements, terms of use, etc., before downloadling.

24th November 2003 Funding for community participation in the context of neighbourhood renewal

The London Connects group has been looking at the needs of the sector that could be met or helped at a regional or sub-regional level - in other words looking at what the GLA and London Connects could practically do to help.  Their 'Baseline Survey' and Recommendations arising from it will be presented to the London Connects Board today.

3rd November 2003 Free IT and Internet Seminars for voluntary and community organisations

* Stuart Lunn from Infoworks on Content management systems (CMS): how they work, what they cost and the benefits they can deliver
* Peter Armstrong and Amanda Squires from OneWorld on Empowering NGOs around the world to use the Internet
The Forums are an opportunity to network and hear three talks on subjects about IT and Internet issues highly relevant to voluntary and community organisastions, followed by an opportunity for open discussion.  If you want to come please email joes@futurefoundation.net so we can get a rough idea of numbers for catering.  The event is free and lunch will be served from 1pm and the talks will start shortly after and finish between 4-5pm.  Venue:  Horwath Clark Whitehill at 25 New St Square off New Fetter Lane EC4A 3LN.  The nearest tubes are Chancery Lane, Blackfriars, Farringdon or City Thameslink.

Ongoing Culture Online is an innovative initiative to increase access to, and participation in, arts and culture.  It brings together cultural organisations with cutting-edge technical providers to create projects that will delight adults and children of all ages and backgrounds.  It aims to:
* enhance access to the arts for children and young people and give them the opportunity to develop their talents to the full;
* open up cultural institutions to the wider community, to promote lifelong learning and social cohesion;
* extend the reach of new technologies and build IT skills;
* support wider and richer engagement and learning by all adults.
