AOL Innovation in the Community Awards
The aim of the AOL Innovation in the Community Awards is to help bring the benefits of the Internet to local communities. We are offering 15 Awards of £2,000 each and a year's free subscription to AOL, and are inviting applications for support for online projects from community groups across the UK from today. We believe that the Awards would be of interest to local community groups that want to either get online for the first time or improve existing Internet facilities. For further information please go to our website: http://www.citizensonline.org.uk/aolawards.shtml or call 020 7348 8390 or email: innovation2003@aol.com

Threat to Survival of UK Online Centres
The National Audit Office (NAO) has voiced concerns over the sustainability of the UK Online network, which is a cornerstone of the government's strategy for creating access to ICT and learning within disadvantaged communities. While the target of 6,000 centres by the end of 2002 was met a month ahead of schedule, many have only short-term revenue funding. The New Opportunities Fund has stated that Lottery money which has been used for capital requirements is unlikely to be a source of future revenue funding. The NAO warns that many centres in the community and voluntary sector remain dependent on public funding. They state "..some of those centres most placed to reach disadvantaged target groups are likely to be least able to find funds from elsewhere.... If UK Online centres are forced to close, it is not clear whether there will be sufficient resources available to set up a replacement in the vicinity". The Department for Education and Skills, which some responsibility for the centres, is to start an email service covering possible funding streams to all UK Online centres. Progress in making e-services accessible to all - encouraging use by older people

The Equalitec forum is now on-line
Why do you think women are leaving the IT industry and what are your ideas to stem this trend? We want to hear your views and experiences. You do not need to register to post a reply. The statement below is featured on the forum:
"The IT sector is losing more women than it recruits. There are things companies can do to change the culture:
* avoid early morning and late night meetings
* make sure that senior executives take their vacations
* encourage people to take their leave - not cash
* delegating when on vacation rather than dialing in
* talking about work life balance for men and women and making it acceptable
But some companies do this and women are still leaving faster than we can hire or promote them into top jobs" says Rebecca George, IBM, Chair of The Women in IT Champions Group, http://www.equalitec.org.uk/forum/index.php

WOMEN IN IT - Engaging and Retaining for Success
"The current situation is bad for women. It means they are missing out on opportunities to earn the higher wages available in the IT sector. It's also bad for business and bad for the economy. An IT industry dominated by men is only using half the available talent and creativity" Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and Minister for Women
Amongst others Women's Support Networks and Voluntary Organisations are invited to attend "... working with women, you know and understand the difficulties that they face. Take this opportunity to share your experience and expertise"
